Stories of a Bruha – Comfy Girl Summer

Brainstorm journal page for strawberry moon drop

Hi, long time no update, so here we go...

We’re trying this sewing & journaling thing again. Less formal & scheduled for content creation, more routine & ritual. I like writing. It’s grounding, plus it’s cheaper than therapy. So if you’re reading this, welcome to my brain. It’s not going to be pretty & cute or perfect & clean, but most likely a little unhinged, slightly unfiltered & hopefully insightful.

Also I've been quiet on the usual social media accounts because I deleted social media from my phone, my accounts are active, but I have not been. I have NO regrets & I could definitely live the rest of my life without it. On the business side of things, I'll need to have someone else manage that. Any Takers? Seriously, let me know! I really want to delegate that onto someone else.

Pattern making updates

Now that that’s out of the way. Here are some updates. We’re still making sewing patterns, building a curated wardrobe & very much trying to work with the moon cycle. Currently we’re working on creating a sewing pattern for a modern daster, also known as a house dress or a mu’umu’u. I’m also working on a pattern for some linen pants with pleats in the front & an elastic waistband (but only in the back 😝 ).

Growing up I wasn't really a dress person, I didn't have anything against being girly I just preferred shorts and a cute top, still do. I remember my grandma, mom & aunties wearing dasters, the prints were tropical or floral & they were just something they wore around the house during leisure time. They were made with woven fabric, so not stretchy & I believe they were made of cotton or a mostly cotton/poly blend. So something breathable.

In my current situation, I live on the third floor of a building that’s been renovated into lofts. Heat rises & it gets really hot in here & turning on the A/C costs money. So my solution to help me stay cool & save money is to start including a daster into my wardrobe, especially for days when the A/C decides it needs a break, shows an error code and doesn’t want to work.

The “traditional” daster was mostly worn around the house. This modern daster is meant to be a little more versatile & instead of cotton I’m leaning towards using linen. A piece that can be worn at home during leisure time, running errands or lunching with the ladies.

Also Loading - Comfy Linen Pants

As a typical millennial I have black leggings for every day of the week and have some how managed to make it part of my work uniform. I used to work for the North Face & got a discount from this old brand called Lucy, I USEEDDD that discount. Also back then the quality matched the price, HIGH. It’s been years and I STILL wear these leggings. Quality Matters!

My jeans are Levis or Lucky Brand, so I haven’t had to buy new jeans. AGAIN quality matters. Plus if the weather is nice I choose shorts. I haven’t gotten on the wide pant leg hype yet. I rarely shop for clothes, I’m very anti fast-fashion & that little voice in my head loves to say “I can make that”. So where bottoms are concerned I’ve been a jeans or leggings girl, BUT NEVER JEGGINGS. Denim isn’t meant to stretch.

Going back to the whole my place gets really HOT, I want to start including some linen pants into my rotation. Linen is a GREAT material, some might say the best. It’s made from flax, a natural fiber known for its breathability & durability. I’m creating the linen pants to be versatile just like the daster, something that can be worn leisurely at home, out running errands or brunching with the besties.

Curating the Wardrobe

These are two pieces I’ve recently realized are missing from my wardrobe, so it’s where I’m starting. The whole building a curated wardrobe has definitely been a slow process for me. The clothes I have currently fit my lifestyle & I’m not the most trend-following, can’t repeat an outfit type. Plus that little voice in my head repeating “I can make that” makes it easy to not impulse buy.

I’m also trying to be very conscious of the materials my clothes are made of. As much as I love my leggings and basic tees I'm trying to avoid synthetic fibers in the things I buy & make now (workout clothes being the exception). So starting with linen pieces just seems right.

We're in the mock-up phase now, so testing the fit & the sewing process. Fingers crossed it all goes well!

Until next time,

💛ana
